The Hague privet, also known as Ligustrum ovalifolium, gets its name from the shape of its leaves: oval.
What makes the privet hedge special is that it is semi-evergreen. During a harsh winter, this plant may lose its leaves.
If we have a “mild” winter, the privet hedge will remain evergreen, allowing you to enjoy your privacy even in winter.
If you’d still prefer a hedge that is 100% guaranteed to remain evergreen, choose a different hedge plant. A laurel species, conifers, or yew would be better options.
The privet has an average growth rate—about 20 to 40 cm per year. It’s best to prune this hedge twice a year. Do this preferably in the spring (March through May) and in the fall (September through November). Would you like the hedge to have a more natural look? Then prune the privet only once a year.
During the blooming season (around May/June), small white flowers may appear on the hedge. Another nice benefit of this variety is that it attracts both birds and insects.
The hedge privet isn’t very picky about soil type and can, in principle, grow well just about anywhere. What this species doesn’t like, however, is soil that remains wet for a long time. In such cases, the hedge privet has trouble establishing roots in the soil. You’ll notice this in the plant’s growth.
An additional advantage of this hedge plant is that it is not sensitive to air pollution and can also withstand sea breezes well.
