Japanese Holly ‘Kanehirae’
The Japanese holly “Kanehirae,” known scientifically as Ilex maximowicziana “Kanehirae,” is a species native to Asia. However, in recent years, this species has been appearing more and more frequently in European gardens. This is because its leaves closely resemble those of the boxwood.
The advantage of this variety is that this hedge plant is resistant to boxwood diseases. It is also extremely hardy, so you don’t have to worry about it during periods of frost. Another well-known boxwood substitute isTaxus baccata.
The “Kanehirae” is not comparable to “normal”hollyplants. Unlike these plants, the Japanese holly “Kanehirae” has smaller leaves, and these leaves are not prickly.
This hedge plant is a moderate grower. That means it grows about 20 to 40 cm per year. Because it has a compact growth habit, you only need to prune it once a year. Do this in the spring (March through May) or in the fall (September through November).
One drawback of this holly species is that it grows only in sandy soil. It’s also important to prepare the soil before planting this species. Therefore, always add peat to the soil. This acidifies the soil and makes it easier for your hedge plants to absorb nutrients.
