We’re very pleased with this nursery! We received a beautiful proprietary variety: the Laurier ‘Elly’. The plants were of good quality, nice and full, and healthy. You can tell right away that they’re grown with a great deal of expertise and care.

In addition, the service was friendly and professional. Everything was delivered neatly, and they kept their promises. We are very happy with the results in our garden and can definitely recommend this nursery to anyone looking for high-quality plants and expert advice.

During a visit to the beautiful nursery in Ottersum, Stan gave us excellent and enthusiastic advice on the different varieties of laurel. We ultimately chose the “Elly.”
Upon delivery, the plants were truly beautiful and fresh as could be, and they more than met our expectations. They fit perfectly into the pre-dug trench, and planting them was a breeze. I’ve rarely experienced such a high standard of service and excellent communication. Definitely worth a full five stars.

Western Tree of Life ‘Brabant’

The Western arborvitae “Brabant” is known in Latin as Thuja occidentalis “Brabant.” This conifer is one of the hardiest species around!

The main advantages of this plant are that this variety can grow in virtually any location and requires very little maintenance. In addition, the hedge plants grow quite densely. As a result, you’ll soon have a dense hedge and can enjoy your privacy.

What makes this species special is that you can grow this conifer into an extremely tall hedge—up to 10 meters high! So if you have troublesome neighbors, this could be a great solution.

Because thisconiferhas a fairly narrow growth habit, it only needs to be pruned once a year. The best time to do this is in the spring (March through May) or in the fall (September through November).

The Western arborvitae ‘Brabant’ closely resembles the Giant tree of life ‘Gelderland’. The main difference between these two plants is that the “Brabant” has a slightly greener color.

During a prolonged period of drought, it’s especially important to pay close attention to this species, as it can be sensitive to such conditions. During this time, make sure the soil remains sufficiently moist. If it isn’t, water it once more—it won’t do this species any harm.

FAQ

The Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' (Thuja occidentalis 'Brabant') is a popular conifer known for its rapid, dense growth and green branches. This tree can grow up to 10 meters tall and is ideal for creating privacy hedges and as a windbreak in gardens.

The Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' offers several benefits:

Fast-growing: With an annual growth rate of 40 to 60 cm, this tree is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to see results quickly.

Privacy: The dense branches provide good screening, allowing you to enjoy your garden in peace.

Low maintenance: This tree is easy to care for and only needs to be pruned occasionally.

For best results, plant the Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Make sure to dig a hole that is 5 cm wider than the root ball on all sides. This will provide enough space to place the root ball in the hole and add potting soil.

In its early years, the Western Tree of Life 'Brabant' needs to be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. We recommend 10 liters of water per plant per week, preferably divided into 2 or 3 watering sessions. Make sure the soil is moist, but be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.

Yes, the Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' is very hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. This makes it suitable for various climates in Europe, where it can survive harsh winters.

Regular pruning helps keep the Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' in shape and promotes dense growth. It is recommended to prune in the spring so that the tree can fully benefit from its summer growth. Be sure not to prune the hedge in the middle of summer, as this can cause sunscald on the branches. Also, check regularly for pests or diseases.

Check regularly for signs of pests such as spider mites and fungi. Also watch for discolored or wilted branches. Proper care and timely treatment are crucial for the tree's health.

The Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' is one of the fastest-growing conifers and can grow up to 60 cm per year under optimal conditions. This makes it an excellent choice for people who want to quickly create a green partition or hedge in their garden.

To promote healthy growth, you can fertilize the Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' with the Organic Hedge Plant Fertilizer from Stan Verwaaij Haagplanten. Do this once in the spring and once in the summer. Follow the instructions on the package for the correct dosage.

Prune the Western Arborvitae 'Brabant' in the spring, just before new growth begins. Use sharp, clean pruning shears and carefully trim the branches to maintain the desired shape. Avoid pruning more than one-third of the plant at a time.
