We ordered 1,500 yew seedlings at the end of February last year. It was a bit nerve-wracking after the snow and frost. They were delivered to us, and we planted them that same week. Taxus media ‘Hilli’ is a beautiful variety! And virtually identical toTaxus media ‘Hicksii’. The main difference is that ‘Hilli’ is the male variety, which does not produce berries. The ‘Hicksii’ is the female variety. This plant does produce berries.
The difference between these plants andTaxus baccataisthat Taxusbaccatahasaless compact growth habit and will therefore form a dense hedge slightly sooner.
Taxusmedia ‘Hilli’ only needs to be pruned once a year. This is because the plant grows a maximum of 20 cm per year. The best time to prune your hedge is in the spring (March through May) or in the fall (September through November). An added benefit is that you won’t have much cleanup work to do, as this plant doesn’t produce much pruning waste.
