We ordered 1,500 yew seedlings at the end of February last year. It was a bit nerve-wracking after the snow and frost. They were delivered to us, and we planted them that same week. Except for 20 of them, all the yews are looking exceptionally healthy. So that’s great! We’re very satisfied with this purchase. We highly recommend buying from here!

We’re very pleased with this nursery! We received a beautiful proprietary variety: the Laurier ‘Elly’. The plants were of good quality, nice and full, and healthy. You can tell right away that they’re grown with a great deal of expertise and care.

In addition, the service was friendly and professional. Everything was delivered neatly, and they kept their promises. We are very happy with the results in our garden and can definitely recommend this nursery to anyone looking for high-quality plants and expert advice.

Yew ‘Hicksii’

Taxusmedia ‘Hicksii’ is a beautiful variety! And it’s virtually identical toTaxus media ‘Hilli’. The main difference is that ‘Hicksii’ is the female variety, which does produce berries in the fall.‘Hilli’isthe male variety of this plant. It does not produce berries in the fall.

The difference between these plants andTaxus baccataisthat Taxusbaccatahasaless compact growth habit and will therefore form a dense hedge slightly sooner.

The ‘Hicksii’ only needs to be pruned once a year. This is because the plant grows no more than 20 cm per year. The best time to prune your hedge is in the spring (March through May) or in the fall (September through November). An added benefit is that you won’t have much cleanup to do, as this plant doesn’t produce much pruning waste.

The “Hicksii” is a very hardy plant that can take a beating. It’s also remarkable that this plant can live to a very old age without any problems.

Are you looking for a hedge that grows faster? Then the laurel might be a good alternative! The‘Elly’ laurelandthe‘Bonaparte’ laurelarebeautiful varieties that will help you create a tall hedge in no time.

FAQ

Taxus media 'Hicksii' is a popular, slow-growing yew variety known for its narrow, upright growth habit. This yew variety can grow up to 4 meters tall and is ideal for creating hedges and formal plantings. Its dark green needles remain green year-round, making 'Hicksii' an attractive choice for any type of garden.

Taxus media 'Hicksii' offers several advantages:

Compact growth: Perfect for small gardens or narrow flower beds where space is limited.

Low maintenance: This species requires minimal maintenance, with only an annual pruning to maintain the desired shape and density.

Hardy: 'Hicksii' is highly resistant to cold temperatures, allowing it to retain its green color year-round.

In the first few years after planting, Taxus media 'Hicksii' needs to be watered regularly, especially during dry spells. Allow for 10 liters of water per plant per week. Make sure the soil stays moist but not too wet to prevent root rot. Mature plants are fairly drought-tolerant and need to be watered less frequently.

Yes, Taxus media 'Hicksii' is very hardy and can withstand severe frost. This characteristic makes it an excellent choice for gardens in temperate climates, where it retains its green color year-round.

Taxus media 'Hicksii' requires minimal maintenance. Pruning once a year is generally sufficient. This helps maintain the desired shape and encourages dense growth. It is best to do this in the spring or after the last frost. Also, check regularly for pests such as fungi or insects.

Check regularly for symptoms such as discolored or wilted needles, and watch for pests such as spider mites or fungi. Proper care, including timely pruning and fertilizing, is essential for the plant's health.

This species of yew grows best in well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral pH. Full sun or partial shade is ideal, but the plant can also thrive in shady areas.

Taxus media 'Hicksii' grows slowly—up to 20 cm per year, depending on conditions. This slow growth makes it an ideal choice for people who want a low hedge, such as in the front yard.

There is little difference between Taxus media 'Hilli' and Taxus media 'Hicksii'. 'Hilli' is the male variety of the two. This variety does not produce berries. 'Hicksii' is the female variety. This variety does produce berries.

For optimal growth, you can feed Taxus media 'Hicksii' with Stan Verwaaij Haagplanten's Organic Hedge Plant Fertilizer in the spring and summer. Be sure to spread the fertilizer evenly around the base of the plant, and follow the instructions on the package for the correct dosage. This provides the plant with essential nutrients for healthy growth.
