Bay Laurel ‘Caucasica’
The Laurier ‘Caucasica,’ also known in Latin as Prunus laurocerasus ‘Caucasica,’ is native to the Caucasus region. That is where this plant gets its name. However, this variety of laurel is also commonly found in Western European gardens, and for good reason!
"Caucasica" is a fast-growing plant and can generally grow 40 to 60 cm per year. The advantage of this is that you’ll quickly have a dense hedge. This means you’ll soon have plenty of privacy and a beautiful property boundary.
This laurel is known for its elongated, dark green leaves. These leaves are similar to those ofthe 'Elly' laurel.
It’s best to prune the ‘Caucasica’ twice a year. The best times to do this are in the spring (March through May) and in the fall (September through November). You can’t go far wrong with pruning. After pruning, the ‘Caucasica’ will grow back fairly quickly.
Thisspecies of laurelhas one flowering season. This occurs in the spring, around April/May. At that time, small white flowers appear among the green branches. These flowers attract butterflies. Afterward, red berries may grow on the plant. These berries, in turn, attract birds.
This type of laurel is best planted in dry or moist soil. It is not advisable to plant this variety in very wet soil, as the plant's roots may rot.
The ‘Caucasica’ is quite frost-hardy. If you’re looking for a variety that’s exceptionally hardy in low temperatures, then considerthe Bay Laurel ‘Bonaparte’and Bay Laurel ‘Elly’ are excellent choices!
