Bay Laurel ‘Otto Luyken’
The “Otto Luyken” laurel, also known in Latin as Prunus laurocerasus “Otto Luyken,” is one of the slowest-growing varieties of laurel. This makes the “Otto Luyken” ideal for creating a low hedge up to 150 cm in height. Are you looking for a tall laurel hedge? Then Laurel ‘Elly’ and Laurel ‘Novita’ are better choices!
In addition to being ideal for a low hedge, this variety of laurel is also perfect for filling in gaps. For example, if you need to fill an area under or around a tree, this variety will quickly form a dense clump.
A nice place to plant the “Otto Luyken”laurelis in the front yard. Since this plant doesn’t grow too tall, you can see over it from inside and enjoy a good view.
This species of laurel has two flowering periods. One is in the spring, around April/May. The other is immediately after summer, around August/September. After the second flowering period, berries may form on the plants. These berries, in turn, attract birds.
Because the hedge plant is a slow grower, you only need to prune the hedge or the border planting once. The best time to do this is in the spring (but no later than May) or in the fall (September through November). An added benefit is that the laurel produces very little pruning waste.
FAQ
-
A laurel grows quickly, so your hedge will close in fast and provide privacy in your garden. In addition, the hedge remains evergreen, and these plants require very little maintenance.
