We’re very pleased with this nursery! We received a beautiful proprietary variety: the Laurier ‘Elly’. The plants were of good quality, nice and full, and healthy. You can tell right away that they’re grown with a great deal of expertise and care.

In addition, the service was friendly and professional. Everything was delivered neatly, and they kept their promises. We are very happy with the results in our garden and can definitely recommend this nursery to anyone looking for high-quality plants and expert advice.

Bay Laurel ‘Bonaparte’

The Laurier ‘Bonaparte’, also known as Prunus laurocerasus ‘Bonaparte’, is a unique variety of laurel!

This bay laurel was recently introduced and is still rarely available on the Dutch market. However, this variety does have all the qualities a good bay laurel needs: it is extremely hardy, resistant to plant diseases, and has a beautiful, compact growth habit. It’s no surprise, then, that “Bonaparte” won a medal for “best newcomer” at Europe’s largest tree nursery trade show in 2020!

What makes this plant special is the bronze glow of its new leaves. This usually occurs at the end of the blooming period, around May or June. It gives your hedge a stunning appearance, creating a beautiful effect in your garden. By the end of summer, the bronze leaves turn green again. The combination of bronze and green leaves is truly beautiful to behold.

Another advantage of the ‘Bonaparte’ is its narrow, compact growth habit. This ensures that your hedge won’t get too wide. That means you’ll need to prune it less often. Pruning once or twice a year is sufficient. Do this in the spring (March through May) and/or in the fall (September through November).

As mentioned earlier, the “Bonaparte”laurelis extremely hardy. In previous tests, “Bonaparte” has proven itself capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -22 degrees Celsius! Along with the Bay Laurel ‘Elly’ it is the hardiest plant in our assortment.

FAQ

Bay laurel 'Bonaparte' is a popular bay laurel plant, known for its dense, glossy leaves; the first leaves have a bronze sheen, which then naturally turns dark green. This versatile plant is ideal for creating hedges and as an ornamental plant in your garden.

This bay laurel grows quickly, with an annual growth rate of 30 to 60 centimeters. This makes 'Bonaparte' perfect for quickly adding privacy and greenery to your garden.

Bay laurel 'Bonaparte' thrives best in well-drained soil and a sunny or lightly shaded location. Make sure to provide enough space for optimal growth.

Young plants need a lot of water, especially during their first year after planting. During dry periods, they may need as much as 10 liters of water per plant per week. Older plants are better able to take care of themselves. But a little extra water during dry periods never hurts.

It's best to prune the 'Bonaparte' laurel in the spring, before new growth begins. A second pruning in late summer will keep the plant looking neat and compact.

Yes, Laurier 'Bonaparte' is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. Young plants may need extra protection during harsh winters.

In principle, this doesn’t make much difference for a hedge. Potted plants can generally be planted year-round. Plants with a root ball can only be planted in the spring and fall.

To do this, use the Organic Hedge Plant Fertilizer from Stan Verwaaij Haagplanten. Fertilize your hedge twice a year: once around April or May, and once around July or August.

In general, this bay laurel plant is hardy. However, watch out for fungal diseases and aphids. Early detection and treatment are important for keeping the plant healthy.

In our online store, you can buy the Laurier 'Bonaparte' directly from the nursery!
