During a visit to the beautiful nursery in Ottersum, Stan gave us excellent and enthusiastic advice on the different varieties of laurel. We ultimately chose the “Elly.”
Upon delivery, the plants were truly beautiful and fresh as could be, and they more than met our expectations. They fit perfectly into the pre-dug trench, and planting them was a breeze. I’ve rarely experienced such a high standard of service and excellent communication. Definitely worth a full five stars.

Bay Laurel ‘Mount Vernon’
The “Mount Vernon” laurel—Prunus laurocerasus “Mount Vernon” in Latin—is also known as the dwarf laurel. And with this variety of laurel, that name speaks for itself.
This is the smallest laurel there is. This variety also barely grows in height, at a maximum of 5/10 cm per year. In fact, this plant grows only in width, making it ideal for use as a groundcover—for example, under a tree or a rock that needs to be filled in with an evergreen plant.
Unlike other plants, with “Mount Vernon” we don’t talk about the number of plants per linear meter but rather the number of plants per square meter. This is because you can’t plant “Mount Vernon” as a hedge. We recommend planting 4 plants per linear meter for “Mount Vernon.”
Another added benefit of this variety is that it requires little to no pruning, since it doesn’t grow very tall. Pruning once every two years is sufficient. Do this in the spring (March through May) or in the fall (September through November). The ‘Mount Vernon’ also produces very little pruning waste, so there isn’t much to clean up!
During the blooming season, around April/May, “Mount Vernon” may produce white flowers. These flowers attract butterflies.
